Making Space to Reconnect with Yourself
You may be managing work, relationships and everyday responsibilities while finding little time to notice how you feel.
Perhaps your thoughts remain busy even when you are resting. You find it difficult to identify what you need, or notice a gap between how you appear to others and what you are experiencing within.
Threads of the Self: A Journey Within Mind & Experience was designed as a three-hour guided workshop offering space for reflection, emotional awareness and personal exploration.
The programme brought together planned activities involving images, words, breath, sensory experiences and sound. Its focus was on giving participants different ways to notice and express their experiences, without expecting a particular insight or outcome.
The Intention Behind the Workshop
Understanding yourself can involve paying attention to several parts of your experience: what you think, how you feel, what you notice in your body and what holds meaning for you.
The workshop was designed around questions such as:
- What has been occupying my attention?
- Which emotions have been difficult to name?
- When do I feel connected to myself?
- What expectations am I carrying?
- What might I need more or less of in my life?
These questions do not require immediate answers. Reflection can begin with noticing uncertainty, recognising a feeling or finding words for something that has been difficult to explain.
What the Programme Was Designed to Explore
Recognising Personal Patterns
Guided reflection was intended to help participants notice recurring thoughts, feelings and responses in everyday situations.
For example, someone might recognise a tendency to agree to requests despite feeling exhausted. Another person might notice that they become self-critical whenever they are uncertain.
The purpose of noticing a pattern is to understand it more clearly and consider what it means in the person’s circumstances.
Reconnecting with Your Authentic Self
This part of the programme focused on exploring the connections between thoughts, emotions, bodily experiences and personal meaning.
“Authentic self” was used as an invitation to consider your own needs, values and experiences, particularly where these may have become difficult to distinguish from other people’s expectations.
Participants were invited to reflect on what felt relevant to them, rather than arrive at a predetermined interpretation.
Exploring Different Ways to Reflect
Some people find it easier to begin with a conversation. Others may respond to an image, a word, a sensory experience or a quiet moment of observation.
The planned activities offered different starting points for reflection. Their purpose was to support exploration, with room for individual preferences and responses.
Methods Included in the Planned Programme
OH Cards
OH Cards use image and word prompts to invite associations, storytelling and discussion.
An image may remind one person of a relationship and another of a decision they are facing. The meaning comes from the participant’s response and the conversation that follows.
In this programme, the cards were intended as reflective prompts. They were not presented as a way to predict the future, diagnose a condition or reveal a fixed hidden truth about someone.
Learn more about OH Cards and how they can be used for reflection.
Aromatherapy and Guided Breathwork
The programme included aromatherapy and guided attention to breathing as sensory elements of the workshop.
These activities were intended to provide opportunities to pause and notice present experience. People differ in how they respond to scents and breathing exercises, so comfort, preferences and relevant sensitivities matter when considering participation.
Usui Reiki-Based Practices
The programme also included Usui Reiki-based practices within its experiential component.
Reiki is associated with an energy-based wellbeing tradition. Its inclusion should be understood in that context, rather than as evidence of a psychological or medical treatment effect.
Participants may interpret such practices differently according to their beliefs, expectations and experiences.
Singing Moon Bowl Sound Experiences
Singing Moon Bowls were included as a sound-based element of the programme.
Listening to sound can provide a focus for attention and reflection. Individual responses may include comfort, curiosity, distraction or discomfort. A particular response should not be assumed.
The workshop description does not establish that the bowls treat mental health conditions or produce a specific physiological effect.
How Experiential Activities Relate to Counselling
An experiential workshop and individual counselling serve different purposes.
A workshop offers shared activities around a theme. Counselling provides an individual therapeutic relationship in which a trained practitioner works with you to understand your concerns and consider suitable support.
Including an activity in a facilitated workshop does not automatically establish its clinical effectiveness. Different components may have different purposes and levels of supporting evidence.
At The Lion Mind, person-centred approaches place importance on the individual’s experience, preferences and feedback. Applied to experiential work, this means explaining an activity’s purpose and respecting that people may find different methods useful or uncomfortable.
If you are seeking support for persistent distress or a mental health concern, a counselling appointment allows your needs to be considered individually.
Who the Workshop Was Designed For
The programme was intended for adults interested in self-reflection and experiential learning, including:
- Working adults wanting space to reflect on stress and personal expectations.
- Individuals interested in exploring their emotions, needs and values.
- People curious about using images, words and sensory experiences for reflection.
- Practitioners or trainees interested in understanding the workshop’s approach to facilitation.
No prior experience with the activities was required. Interest in the programme did not require participants to share a particular belief or arrive with a clearly defined personal issue.
Facilitators Listed for the Workshop
Mr James Chong
Principal Counsellor, The Lion Mind
James’s contribution to the planned programme drew on counselling, psychotherapy and the use of experiential methods, including OH Cards, within reflective work.
Ms Fion Tay
Founder, Flow with Kindness
Fion’s contribution drew on her work in identity exploration, reflective practices and holistic wellbeing.
The collaboration was designed to bring these different perspectives into a shared workshop setting. Their respective roles should be understood according to their own training and scope of practice.
